Air Liquide’s biogas technology enables our recent $150M investment to produce and supply renewable liquid hydrogen to the western US mobility markets.
Today, Air Liquide joins the nation in celebrating National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, raising awareness of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies that contribute to the US energy transition. In celebrating this day, Air Liquide announces plans to produce renewable liquid hydrogen at our plant to be located in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Hydrogen will be produced in part from renewable natural gas (RNG) upgraded from biogas using our advanced separation membrane technology.
The deployment trajectory for hydrogen energy infrastructure requires investments in the development of reliable and resilient hydrogen supply chain solutions. This large scale project will include production of 30 tons of liquid hydrogen per day. This project represents the first step expanding hydrogen supply to the region, enabling the market in California to continue its growth to an expected 200 stations by 2025. California currently has the largest total number of fuel cell vehicles and one of the largest networks of retail refueling stations in the world.
Air Liquide is committed to producing hydrogen to meet the renewable requirements of the mobility market in California. In addition to this new production facility, Air Liquide has announced the world's largest hydrogen production project utilizing a proton exchange membrane-based electrolyzer, located in Canada. Air Liquide has also invested in the development of two new landfill biogas purification plants in the U.S. that will help support the pathways to renewable hydrogen. The purification and valorization of biogas is a promising example of resource utilization in a sustainable economy. As world leaders with technologies and expertise that span the entire biogas to RNG to hydrogen market, Air Liquide is transforming the way sustainability is approached.
